If you’re an EU citizen (Italian, Portuguese, French, German, etc.) and you’re planning to move to Spain to work or live, congratulations! Thanks to the EU Freedom of Movement, you’re allowed to reside in Spain — but to do so legally and comfortably, there are a few key steps.
In this post, I’ll explain two essentials you need as an EU citizen moving to Spain: the NIE and the Spanish public health card.
✅ What is the NIE and why do you need it?
The NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is a foreigner identification number that you’ll need for almost everything in Spain:
- Working legally;
- Opening a bank account;
- Renting a flat;
- Getting internet or electricity;
- Paying taxes;
- Accessing public services.
📝 How to apply for the NIE
Step-by-step:
- Book an appointment online at the Spanish government site:
👉 sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es - Select your province and choose the service called “Certificados UE”.
- Complete the EX-18 form.
- Bring these documents to your appointment:
- Your valid EU passport or ID card;
- A copy of your work contract, school enrollment, or proof of financial means;
- Proof of NIE fee payment (Modelo 790, Code 012);
- Proof of address in Spain (if available).
🛑 Note: This is an in-person process at the local police immigration office (Comisaría de Extranjería). You can hire an agency to help with booking, paperwork, and even to go with you.

🏥 Public Health Coverage in Spain for EU Citizens
You may already have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC or TSE) issued in your home country, which is valid for temporary stays (tourism, short-term visits).
But if you live and work in Spain, you should register with the Spanish public healthcare system and get your regional health card (Tarjeta Sanitaria).
How to apply for the Spanish health card:
- After you get your NIE, your employer registers you with Social Security (Seguridad Social).
- Then, go to your local health center (centro de salud) with:
- Your NIE;
- Proof of local address (empadronamiento);
- Your EU passport or ID;
- Your Social Security number.
You’ll receive your personal Spanish health card, which allows you access to doctors, emergency care, prescriptions, and more.
🤝 Need help with the process?
Although the process is relatively straightforward, many people prefer to use an immigration assistant to:
- Book your NIE appointment;
- Prepare and translate your documents;
- Submit everything correctly the first time;
- Go with you to the appointment (especially if you don’t speak Spanish yet).
